A simply amazing train ride through the Verde River Canyon from Clarkdale to Perkinsville and back. 4-hours of fun, wildlife watching, and history along some of the most remote stretches of river anywhere in America. Every month there are special train events such as the “Eagle Watch” for viewing one of the few bald eagle nesting sites in Arizona, the “Grape Train Express” for wine tasting, Starlight Tours that coincide with the full moon, Fall Color Tours that highlight viewing of the deciduous tree color change in this unique riparian area, and the super bonus “Ales on Rails”, an every Sunday in October afternoon beer-fest ride celebrating Oktoberfest. The towering cliff walls, the constant companion of the Verde River below the rails, dark tunnels, suspension bridges, tight winding tracks, and the outdoor viewing from cars where you are a part of the scenery make this train ride as good as they get. You’ll experience fantastic views of Sycamore Canyon’s confluence with the Verde and unique side canyons like Rafael Draw that cut suddenly from the canyon walls and into your vista. I consider this one of the best outdoor activities in Arizona that families can enjoy together, especially if you catch one of the many special event rides that are geared for kids.
