I could write a book on why I love Minami and how it has become one of my favorite restaurants anywhere on the planet. No matter what I could say it would all begin with Yoshi, Minami’s owner, founder, and sushi chef. He is also been my friend for over 12 years and we have had some great late night talks over a bottle of Sake. Sedona was bereft of Sushi until he and his wife Gina came to town. Boy was I ever right there the first week. If you plan to dine here, though, make no mistake, Yoshi is the boss. You may be in Sedona, however it might as well be Okinawa, Yoshi’s home. He shares his deep love of Japanese food preparation by using the finest ingredients, traditional care, and larger-than-most Sushi restaurant portions. All this at a very reasonable price. Just don’t saunder in at night and ask for an order to go (no dinner to-go orders!) or neglect to place your entire order upfront on a busy night and expect him to make later additions for you at the sake of other patrons who are waiting for their first piece. Yoshi was the youngest Sushi chef ever brought from Japan to open a major U.S. city’s (Chicago) first Benihana Restaurant, the original chain of high-end Japanese restaurants launched in America by famous Japanese entrepreneur Rocky H. Aoki. Yoshi makes his own custom furniture, grows several varieties of grapes, simultaneously smokes and jogs, and has one incredible fish connection. Tell Yoshi that Jim sent you and you might get the royal treatment. Closed on Sunday.
