Sedona

Canyon Outfitters
West Sedona

www.sedona.net/shop/canyon

Retail. The most comprehensive Sedona source for hiking and camping equipment. Tents, topo maps, boots, sleeping bags, water bottles, technical rock climbing gear, packs, and clothing. Another great family-run operation. Prices run higher than the discount stores, however the friendly, personalized service, Sedona location, and knowledgeable local staff make it a winner.

Sedona Sports
Just south of the “Y’ – Creekside Plaza
251 Hwy 179
928.282.1317 – 866.204.2377

Retail and rental. Sedona Sports is a one-stop hiking, biking, fishing, and sporting goods store. Its modest size offers an amazing assortment of all the basic necessities in each category. They rent bikes, packs, hiking sticks, binoculars, baby carrier packs, strollers, tents, and even GPS at reasonable prices. Even if you forgot something at home necessary to your spur-of-the-moment adventure, you can get it here.

Jerome

Ghost Town Gear
Lower 89A after the split to two-way traffic
928.634.3113

Retail. My friend Noel’s son started this store a few years back and it’s doing great. If you’re in Jerome, look for this store on the ground level of a 3 story building across from the House of Joy restaurant. Great selection of backpacking and camping gear with a nice offering of little essentials like Swiss Army knives and compasses.

Flagstaff

Aspen Sports
Downtown
15 N. San Francisco Street
928.779.1935

Retail. Definitely my overall favorite Flagstaff outdoor gear store. Crammed with an excellent array of gear. I get my climbing approach and running shoes here. They have an extensive line of clothing including Royal Robbins shirts, one of the best you can buy anywhere. I look for their seasonal sales and get some great bargains. They also carry the Isis line of women’s wear, a choice brand designed by women for women and just coming of age. Check out the Isis Ariel Hoodie. Nice.

Babbitt’s Backcountry Outfitters
Downtown
12 E. Aspen
928.774.4775

Retail. High end hiking and backpacking gear, rock climbing shoes and supplies, and durable clothing. At the busy Downtown crossroads of San Francisco Street and Aspen, this store is home to only the finest lines of gear; Patagonia, Mountain Hardware, North Face, and other respected brands. My first down vest purchased here, a tough Mountain Hardware puffy, is still in use after 10 seasons on the trail. I have a new one, too, because my cat Asia took a frightened leap off the original vest and ripped a couple of sizeable tears that had to be hand-sewn. It’s still useful, though the unsightly stitches across the chest (I’m no seamstress) provided inspiration for the name “Frankenvest”.

Big 5 Sporting Goods
As you enter Flag from the south on 89A - Directly across from Wal-Mart
2775 S. Woodlands Village Blvd.
928.214.0590

Retail. A huge sporting goods store that has very reasonable prices. Don’t expect the high-end brand names, though . Instead focus on the well-made items that you can use day-to-day. During their annual sleeping bag sale I picked up a couple of nice fabric and cloth-stuffed bags for covering the old VW Van bed in warmer weather. They have a good selection of hunting equipment for avid hunters.

Four Season Outfitters and Guides
Downtown
107 W. Phoenix Avenue
928.226.8798
www.fsoutfitters.com

Retail and rental. Camping and backpacking-related gear. Four Seasons has rental equipment at reasonable prices. They also offer a complete guiding service to Grand Canyon, Utah’s Escalante, and other Southwestern destinations. Their powerhouse store is in Phoenix, however this store houses the guides who know Sedona, Northern Arizona, and the Grand Canyon. If you’re lucky, one of them might be on duty that day to answer your innermost secret questions about where to go.

Flagstaff Adventure Sports
Just north of Downtown on Humphreys Street
612 N. Humphreys Street
928.779.5393

Retail and rental. Ultralight backpacking, trail running, and full bike shop. Snowboard rentals, too.

Peace Surplus
Downtown
14 W. Route 66
928.779.4521
www.peacesurplus.com

Retail and rental. A one-stop-has-it-all store. These guys have been around Flagstaff for years. They offer only a modest selection in each category of gear, however unlike most outdoor sport stores in Flagstaff they have almost every category including fly fishing supplies and ski equipment. They offer rentals for basic camping and backpacking equipment needs. Yes, like their name, they do carry a small selection of military surplus items. It’s a mellow store with nice people. I ‘ve been a steady customer for over 15 years and get my 5-10 hiking shoes here. “Five - Tennies”, as they are known to trail aficionados, fit like padded slippers and can take the abuse of backpacking as well as year-round hiking. I wore them daily on Jeep tours and many a passenger asked me where they could purchase them. Here.

Popular Outdoor Outfitters
Near NAU
901 S. Milton Road
928.774.0598

Retail. Popular is a small chain of outfitter and sporting goods stores that has good prices and a large selection. They carry a lot of clothing and their shoe and boot selection is one of the largest in Northern Arizona. Their gizmo section full of miscellaneous camping and hiking accoutrements is one of the best in town. Pop carries a limited number of local Topo maps, too. It is one of the only stores I know, if not the only one, that carries the old 2”- 4” thick slabs of yellow camp foam used primarily for car camping. Think pre-Thermarest and before Insulite. Visualize your old bed on plywood at the hippie commune. Now you’ve got it...

Vertical Relief Climbing Center
205 S. San Francisco Street
928.556.9909
www.verticalrelief.com

Retail and rental. For over a decade V.R. has been Northern Arizona’s best-equipped indoor climbing gym with over 6,500 square feet of space, 15 top ropes, a lead area, climbing cave complete with lots of foam padding, and a great gear shop that sells or rents state-of-the-art hardware, ropes, harnesses, and shoes. Rain or shine you can pitch and ply your trade.
