Adele Saronde and an incredible group of earth artists create gardens as a service to humanity and inspire others around the world to do the same. Beauty, refreshment, safety, healing, utility, low maintenance, and low cost are some of the criteria that describe their work. Their Sedona work can be seen at the Sedona Medical Center, Kachina Point, the Terra Rosa School, the Lodge at Sedona, Sedona Schnebly’s last homestead, the Arroyo Pinon Botanical Garden, and the various Sedona Public Schools. GfH continues to need the support of the public for appreciation, financial aid, and volunteer work. I am a gardener and plant lover. To me GfH’s work resonates as one of the finest local groups that demonstrates strong intention, true caring, and the realization of their dreams. Many, many people benefit from their love and vision. If you like to play in the dirt and work with inspired people from many walks of life, this might just be your place to shine. The green world awaits your touch...

These people deserve and get a lot of respect in Sedona. A “No Kill” shelter that takes in cats and dogs, the Sedona Humane Society has a long history of placing pets with thousands of new owners. I know. Over the years I have gotten several cats from the shelter and in the last 2 years I have adopted the two best dogs in the world, Dharma and Deuce. Their free dog obedience classes are worth your time should you choose a canine friend. Look for their fuzzy donation boxes shaped like dogs placed throughout Sedona in restaurants, galleries, coffeehouses, and gift shops and drop in your spare change. Better yet, attend their annual auction and Gala Ball where you can bid on amazing art, gifts, local services, and hotel stay coupons as a way of supporting the Society’s efforts. Bravo.

KSB – Keep Sedona Beautiful
360 Brewer Road
Sedona, AZ 86336

www.keepsedonabeautiful.org/index.html

Back in 1972 a few visionary residents proposed some distinct ideas about how to keep Sedona a beautiful place. After all these years, Sedona has remained true to KSB’s vision largely because of hundreds of volunteers who have given their time and effort without any other reward except the pleasure of knowing that they made a difference. With over 5 million visitors a year Sedona is a remarkably clean place. Look at Hwy 89A. Any other location with that much traffic would not look nearly as nice were it not for a group like KSB. If you see a KSB volunteer dressed in their orange safety vest and picking up trash along the highway, give them a honk and a wave. Highest honors and thanks go to these folks.

Sedona Historical Society

The Sedona Historical Society is located in Jordan Historical Park in Uptown Sedona. They carry the torch for the Sedona Heritage Museum. Volunteers manage the facility and handle public access to the historical archives. A large society membership, local and non-local, supports their work. They have a great reference library with 1,000’s of newspaper clippings and articles related to Sedona. A priceless historic photo collection obtained from numerous old-time families consisting of over 20,000 photos is being scanned into digital format and will one day be available on DVD or CD. I have known many of the Museum volunteers over the years. When I was the Guide Manager at Pink Jeep Tours they assisted me with several local history questions that I needed answered in order to complete the curriculum I used for training new guides. Many of the old-time photos used on SedonaInformation.com’s website are from their collection. Thanks Janine!

My old friend David Keeber is at the helm of Sedona’s beautiful library. He’s been around Sedona for quite a few years and can tell you just about anything you need to know about town. The library’s design with its spacious interior and ample natural light stuns most first-time visitors. The creative use of flagstone throughout, the high ceiling, and the indoor mini-gardens give it a earthy, botanical feel. I love to sit in the main hall and read my favorite periodicals. It feels like a church filled with books. The library has a new Village of Oak Creek service center at 56 West Cortez Drive to accommodate the folks that live out that way (928.284.1603).

The purpose of the Sedona Visual Artists' Coalition is to create a supportive community which is educational, exploratory, and social in nature.

The Sedona Visual Artists Coalition is a Community of 200 plus professional artists in greater Sedona and the surrounding area, they work in different mediums: photography, oil and acrylics, mixed media, watercolor, fiber, wood, glass, ceramics, metal, and film. This group comes together to share work and techniques, opportunities and events, and in general have a friendly inspiring experience. We work toward developing an artist community, which is educational and exploratory in the visual arts. Our community service is to raise the consciousness in the community by choosing an important and controversial issue and creating an exhibition about it. This gives the opportunity for the community to look at an issue "through a different door…."

The Coalition is developing a mentoring program for children of all ages and has been involved with designing collaborative sculptures in the West Sedona Park; painting an art car for the Scottsdale Contemporary Museum Car parade, representing artists on the Sedona Arts & Culture Commission, initiating and writing art columns in the local newspaper. We also set up visits to different artists studios and foundries and are politically active in regard to the Arts.

Sedona Westerners
www.sedonawesterners.org

Founded in 1961, the Sedona Westerners has evolved into Sedona’s premiere hiking club. Check out their history on this website and be dazzled by the historical list of member names that includes many of Sedona’s original pioneer families like the Schneblys, Thompsons, and McBrides. Many of Sedona’s present day hiking trails were opened by the Westerners in conjunction with the Coconino National Forest’s Sedona Ranger District. Westerner hiking journeys take place weekly in spring, winter, and fall and offer all levels of challenges. This group truly represents Sedona residents’ spirit of outdoor adventure, health, and exploration. Attend one of their meetings, get acquainted with their friendly style, and you’ll be a trail hiker forever. I’ve got a rare copy of the important local history book published in 1968 by the Sedona Westerners and the Sedona Public Library called Those Early Days. It’s a collection of short stories by early residents that details Sedona’s history from its pioneer days to the late 1960’s. It’s an incomparable resource for anyone who wants to learn the area’s history from those who were integral part of its earliest phases. I treasure it because Ellsworth M. Schnebly, Sedona Schnebly’s son, wrote his name across his childhood photo with the inscription “Ellsworth Schnebly - Trail Boss 1967-1968”. He wrote an informative article called “How Sedona Was Named” that explains the history behind his mother Sedona’s name and how it was chosen for the town’s designation. Nothing like hearing it from the source.

A hidden gem for learning about current Arizona news pertaining to sustainability issues and concerns. Volunteers maintain this Sedona website and blog. They keep it focused through research, magazine articles, forums, special events, government legal issues reporting, and a lot more. Water issues, climate, agriculture, alternative transportation, solar applications, sustainable communities, and high-performance building are some of the topics covered in their forums. I particularly like their Resource Listings because I like to stay on top of the latest solar, green construction, and agriculture technologies. Their resource links help me do that. I found new water purification resources and rainwater harvesting ideas on their website and felt quite at home.

Verde Valley Forum for Public Affairs
www.verdevalleyforum.org

Informed consensus building for action on issues of critical importance concerning the Verde Valley and its communities. Starting in 1985 with Forum 1, called the “Sedona Forum at that time, this group of highly skilled mediators, researchers, speakers, and planners has continued to produce positive results for all involved on a wide variety of important local issues and concerns. 2005 marks their 20th anniversary and Forum. I had the great pleasure of attending some sessions of Forum 10 in 1994, the critically important “Building Partnerships with the Forest Service” forum. That year marks the beginning of a turbulent time for Sedona’s landscape resulting from the ever-increasing number of visitors on the land and the accompanying impacts that were becoming sadly evident. The splendid volunteer group Friends of the Forest was one of the many positive results that came directly from this forum’s outcomes. The meetings were exciting and at times full of opposing ideas. The Forum’s talented team directed the meetings’ focus toward what really mattered and established a consensus between the many passionate attendees. It was an extremely important step that resulted, I believe, in creating the actual cornerstone for the protection of Sedona’s natural resources. Today they still carry the torch and continue to host productive and sometimes ground-breaking forums.
