Live Music Venues

Sedona has an abundant musical scene if you know where to look for it. Whether you want to learn, listen, or dance, Sedona will serve your needs. Many Sedona venues now host a revolving array of nationally-known acts and our local groups still bring out the crowds: DJ Hareesh packs the dance floor wherever he plays and World-class Jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan calls Sedona his home. Even John Mayall, the blues and rock legend who I saw perform in Denver in 1970, has a house tucked away in Sedona’s hills. Did you know that Winamp, the original software for Windows music applications, was developed by a young Sedona man? Expert instructors are available for harp, piano, guitar, hand drumming, flute, didjeridu and even sitar. And you can always join the percussion scene with dozens of passionate participants at Cathedral Rock on the Full Moon, a tradition for well over 15 years. How about Saturday night drumming on Schnebly Hill Road?

Call first to confirm the performance, dance options, and other fun factors for your Sedona night out. Some venues have it all while others are restaurants with quiet background musicians adding to the fine dining experience. Special dance nights with local DJs, drum circles, and one-of-a-kind jams are also some of the delights to be had on the music scene.

I personally guarantee that Sedona’s own brewery floats some of the best beer in America. Owner Fred Kraus spent over 10 years in Germany studying and ultimately mastering the art of brewing. He holds the German Purity Law certificate required of any brew master working in the European tradition. The Brewery features an amazing variety of local bands, spotlight musicians, and a Wednesday night drum circle from 7 -10 that will knock your socks off. Party with the locals, enjoy local music, and sip a powerful brew in a delightfully relaxed atmosphere.

Drum Circles
928.301.0259 - Information contact: Chris Wales

FULL MOON - Sedona drum circles have a long history. For over 15 years, the Full Moon circle at Cathedral Rock has been a Sedona legend. Coconino National Forest regulations forbid open campfires so the circle tends to take place April through October. Depending on the weather, though, the Full Moon circle may also have a few hardy souls show up for March, November, or even December if it's unseasonally warm. Bring a blanket or plastic chair, flashlight or headlamp, water and refreshments, and all the rhythm instruments you can get your hands on. On an average night, 15 - 45 people attend with approximately half of those present making music. In 1998 there was an insane circle of over 500 drummers. It went on until sunrise.

The circle's location is centered upon a group of beautiful sandstone pads near the Rock's base. Take Highway 179 south about 1 1/2 miles from the "Y" in Uptown Sedona until you reach the "Back O' Beyond" subdivision. Turn right and follow the B-O-B road downhill about one mile. You'll travel along a narrow, windy road through a section of rocky cliffs. As the road exits the cliff section you'll see the Cathedral Rock trailhead parking lot on your left. Park here and follow the trail uphill approximately 500 yards, a short 5-10 minute hike from the parking lot. Didgeradoos, rhythm instruments, and drums of all types keep the beat. Dancers keep the atmosphere ethereal and the energy increases and the music echos off the sandstone cliffs behind the circle. The trance starts at sunset, though it's not uncommon for the real set to take off an hour or so after the sun sets. Be patient if you attend. Some nights it's wailing right at sunset while on other nights it takes awhile for the hard-core drummers to show up and the scene to cook. The circle can go on until 3am so it's worth the wait.

SATURDAY NIGHT - There's a nice, tight local drum circle every Saturday night on a similar weather-related schedule. The Saturday night circle can be found near the picnic tables at the Schnebly Hill Road hiking trail parking lot just about 1 mile up Schnebly Hill Road. This parking area is located where the pavement ends and the uphill dirt road section begins. This circle brings in anywhere from 5 - 25 musicians and is attended by a local core of regulars that keep this event strong and consistent.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT - Every wednesday night at the West Sedona Oak Creek Brewing Company there is an outdoor drum circle from 6:30pm - 9pm. After 9pm the circle moves indoors. The Brewery is famous for its world-class brews and their outdoor beer garden is a magical spot in Sedona. In cold weather the circle forms around a warm, crackling fire in a raised cement firepit. The dancers move about the perimeter of the firepit and the drummers fuel their moves. In warm weather the firepit converts to a flower garden and the sound of the corner waterfall is silent beneath the sound of clinking beer glasses and potent drums. In both seasons, when the circle moves inside amidst the stainless steel and copper brewing tanks, the sound does an about face and concentrates incredibly. The echo off the cement walls, floors, and tanks is a bit too much for some, however once you give into it there seems to be another phase that evolves from the long-wail of the outdoor setting into the boxed-in sound of the brewhouse. Talking is impossible, so drinking it is. Come with your drum and have a blast. SJOR celebrates its 25th year in 2006. Over the years I have seen Jazz on the Rocks performances at several historical venues. The four day festival has hosted such greats as Count Basie, Chuck Mangione, Herbie Hancock, Al Jarreau, Nancy Wilson, and Ramsey Lewis among other jazz wonders. This outdoor Sedona tradition is a jazz lover’s dream.

Red Rocks Music Festival

A Sedona summer classical music festival. The Red Rocks Music Festival is held the week before Labor Day and on Labor Day weekend is the only summer festival of its caliber in Arizona. Chamber music and orchestral performances dominate the event while master classes and workshops are held throughout the week for those fortunate enough to attend. Book early if you want in on the classes since these are one-of-a-kind opportunities to study with masters of musical art.
