Carved American Alabaster
The Carvings of Paul Hawkins and Susan Zalkind
928.567.2281
www.alabaster.net

Dazzling lapidary work and alabaster rock carving in the form of bowls, vases, containers, roses, and Doodleysquats. Some creations are adorned with semi-precious stones or crystal specimens like the fantastic red and white alabaster container capped with lapis lazuli (“Recent Works”) or the container with a cluster of Uruguayan amethyst crystals on the lid (“Recent Works - Orange Alabaster Container”). Susan’s roses are laboriously carved out of single pieces of white Arizona alabaster and feature veined leaves of rare green Utah alabaster. In 30 years she has carved only 18 of these works of art. Her most recent rose was created over a 3 year period. They are unbelievably delicate and realistic and compare in artistry with the works of the greatest oriental and European masters. Their work has been featured in the lapidary industry’s most prestigious magazine, “Lapidary Journal”, in 1996 and 2000. I have several friends who sculpt and carve marble, alabaster, lithium, lavulite, lapis, and pipestone that I will definitely introduce to Paul and Susan’s work for added inspiration. No pun intended, they rock.

Gail Craig
928.284.6865
www.gailcraig.com

A talented artist of several mediums. Her bracelets combine metal and stone beads to give a historical feel, like precious objects coveted by royalty. I find that Gail’s “Essence Series” paintings are the most intriguing pieces of her artwork. The 2,000 year old encaustic painting technique she utilizes gives her work an almost 3-dimensional feel due to the depth and glow of the medium. The encaustic process involves a careful blend of pigment, damar resin, and beeswax that involves heating the paint when its applied from the palette. It’s the same medium used by ancient Greeks and Egyptians to paint the covers of a king’s or queen’s sarcophagus so it literally burns itself onto the wood or canvas. The result is a airy mix of translucent layers of fused paint. Gail excels in this unusual medium and I highly recommend a visit to her online studio.

Dogs of Virtue
www.dogsofvirtue.com

The absolutely stunning art of Tara McGovern who paints dogs with a 15th century Flemish-inspired style. Celebrate canines as you never have through the eyes of a master portrait painter whose mission is to present dogs in a deeper sense, to help us experience them as conscious, caring, emotional, and loving sentient beings. Stop by Oak Creek Small Animal Clinic (928.282.1195 - 3130 W. Hwy 89A) and look on the wall directly behind the reception counter for a nice original dog painting by Tara. I have relied upon Oak Creek Small Animal Clinic for all of my animal friend care for over 17 years. Dr. Thomas Remmler and Dr. Jeannine Kinney are totally caring professionals who not only provide excellent care for animals like my dogs Dharma and Deuce, but they also support the arts by purchasing and displaying local art like Tara’s. Look for her dynamic artwork around town in selected galleries or contact her personally to commission a portrait of your favorite canine pal. Her paintings can be packaged and shipped worldwide. Paul Lawrence Curtis
928.300.4509
www.lawrencecurtis.com

Paul’s work demonstrates a lot of style and inspiration. He captures what he calls “The Essence of Life” and is an artist of the New Millennium. Some of his colorful subjects are humans in love, Tango dancers, celebrities, warriors from the Old World and New, lions, Angels and Light bodies, and abstract Sedona avatars. My favorite series is his fantastic “Women of Honor”. It chronicles the feminine beauty of Sedona women and is only matched by his painting titled “Men of Honor” which features the familiar faces of Sedona men. Paul welcomes commissions and his art can be found on display at various venues around town.

Paul Gazda
928.284.0955
www.gazdaart.com

There is a lot of undiscovered talent in Sedona in spite of the large number of galleries who tend to display better-known or “proven” artists. In my humble opinion Gazda definitely qualifies as a unique creative mind and deserves his own permanent local gallery venue. He has three primary series of work, “Concept Series”, “Household Icon Series”, and “Didactic Series”. Each series illustrates his skill in a different medium while using cross-over skills from all three. Marvel at his “Hale-Bopp” and “Evolution” in the Concept Series and “One Pair of Jeans” in the Household Icon series. Gazda’s didactic “We Are Sorry” and “Ethnic Cleansing” reveal the artist’s universal conscience in 3-D as he combines photos, acrylic, and clothing on wire mesh to tell an encompassing story. Gazda is in the house.

Liam Herbert is sure to touch hearts with his new bronze titled “One”. He is donating 50% of the proceeds of the limited edition of 44 bronze sculptures to the American Cancer Society. “One” signifies the emotional challenge, personally and in relationships, for women who deal with breast cancer. I don’t know Liam, however his dedication and generosity demonstrate a unique side of the world of art, the power to use it to immediately and directly change lives through this kind of philanthropy. My greatest respect, Liam.

Wendy Harford

She is available to instruct and perform in activities related to NatureConnect teachings.

Bev Jenai
www.bevjenaiart.com
bev@bevjenaiart.com

Man oh man, Bev's style and composition reach me. In fact, I love her work period. Her nude "Woman of Many Colors" has a rich, dark mood perfect for portraying her naked subject. It oozes sensuousness and evokes an essence that I find moving; "Bronzed Chocolat Au Lait" is a strong pastel study of male power and poise, the subject facing what could be the open space of Monument Valley while gazing into a reflection of what lies within his energy; and "Tranquility" steps away from her traditional mode of human anatomy work and presents a lush riparian landscape in oil with airy, impressionist measure. Bookmark her website.

Suzanne Klotz

www.suzanneklotz.com

Tropical, tribal, and crazy amazing. Suzanne’s 3-D works involve a mix of beads, stitching, and acrylic on canvas. These are large works, some 4 feet by 6 feet. With that in mind, think about the time involved in creating such intricate art, especially with the complex beading and stitching detail. I believe that she is a master in her mixed media art form. See if you agree.

Rose Moon
929.282.7730
www.rosemoon.net

Rose has a fascination with “pictures and stories”. I catch a strong spark from Rose’s portraits, flowers, and landscapes. They have a deep taste about them or some mystical aspect that I can’t quite put my magician’s finger on. Take look through her “Portraits and Figurative” series and see if you can find the Eve in the Red Rocks (“Truth or Dare”) that looks suspiciously like Cher. Magnifique!

Lily Nava
928.639.4360 - 562.201.0549
www.lilynavagallery.com

Lily is a Fusion Artist - in her words: “I prefer to work at night when the world outside is still. It magnifies what I am feeling inside when painting. I love that art has no boundaries and that anything is possible. To dream the impossible dream would be an understatement of what I feel when I paint I want everyone to feel my joy, peace and the spirit of love when they gaze at my works. At the very least, to see something they never thought could be portrayed on canvas. That is my affirmation for all my future works to come."

Lily's abstract Fairies are subtle and dreamy, the vibrant light of her canvas titled "Ancient Light" reminds me of the primal light of Arizona sunsets, and her "The Spirit Collection" presents a soul journey and visions, inspired no doubt, by the beauty of Sedona and maybe Lily's inner path to spirit. My favorite so far is her "Artist's Challenge I". It shines in its depth of vibrant color and mix of intense energy swirls. Like a dancing Dervish, it moves in dance and prayer.

Carolyn is a personal friend of mine and a great artist, illustrator, and muralist. Her portraits are earthy and rich with a touch of Native American energy pervading the canvas. She’s excellent at pen and ink illustration, too, applying her talents to advertising, logo work, and business design.

Reyne Treve specializes in oil paintings and ceramics. Her artwork has included custom dinnerware, large sculptural pieces, mosaic floors, custom furniture, framed prints and giclees, and decorative pillars embedded with porcelain.

David Wilder
www.wilderarts.com

The crazed surrealist art of David Wilder always has a twist. I love his painting “Big Hat Country” for its Dada-style message and “Different Drummer” for its simple yet complex implications. David’s style projects realism, not abstract ideas, and it lends itself well to his sense of humor, sometimes tongue-in-cheek, sometimes evocative, always on target.

Worlds of Good Fortune - Trea Christopher Grey
928.282.2772 - 866.680.9643
http://worldsofgoodfortune.com/home.html

Hold onto your hat as you enter the Worlds of Good Fortune website. Luminous galleries of Trey Grey’s metaphoric art await at every turn. My favorite is his Feng Shui gallery, which leads to the 5 Elements, each a complex gallery unto itself, presenting Trea’s inspirational art metaphors on the journey called Life. I adore the washed pastel colors and Zen-like simplicity that characterize his visions. The website itself is a marvel to enjoy with its black background and gentle paths leading from one visionary world to another. Vocal poems recited by performance artist Gabrielle Young (www.gabrielleyoung.com) are embedded next to much of the art so you can listen to graceful thoughts as you gaze upon images of awakening.
